What Happens In Hilton Head...
There's a little town out in the western desert of this country where casinos and brothels are perfectly legal and easy to find. It's a town where you never walk on anything that isn't asphalt, concrete or carpet; a town where the neon glows, the whiskey flows and children aren't necessarily welcome. In that town it seems that you have to be twenty-one to go anywhere except the bathroom and even older (and certainly wiser) than that to avoid going home on a bus. Everyone is familiar with "Sin City", and with the slogan; "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". Well, if Hilton Head had a slogan it would be something like; "what happens here you can take anywhere".
It's hard to even find neon on Hilton Head Island. The only casinos you'll find might be at an occasional "just for fun" charity event. Sure, you can walk on concrete, asphalt and carpet if you prefer, but most folks here think beach sand and cool grass is nicer, and we prefer the concrete on the swimming pool deck. You'll find the real "wild" life on Hilton Head; mostly Dolphins and Alligators, with an occasional Logger Head Turtle or Pelican.
Of course there are a few adult oriented venues, like night clubs and lounges, but it is nearly impossible to find a restaurant that doesn't have a booster seat or high chair waiting in the corner. Practically every summer day it is easy to find family oriented or child specific entertainment, sometimes in several places at once; and very often, free of charge. Hilton Head has Mermaids, Magicians, Puppeteers and Clowns; on stage and wandering about various restaurants and eateries. Hilton Head has only one "Elvis"; a lovable, portly old gentleman of an Elvis, and you could be comfortable taking your grandmother or your granddaughter to see his show.
Children are entertained here; and parents are thankful. Parents are thankful that they don't have to worry about the language the performers use or the costumes they wear. Parents are thankful that the shows are free, the performers are professional and the children are entertained long enough for them to rest there tired feet. It seems that all parents, vacationing with their children, have the same dream; to rest, if for only a moment, without being pulled in a dozen different directions. Here, Mom and Dad can sit and relax as the children are told stories, sung to, and often invited to come on stage and be part of the entertainment. Whether it's at the outdoor stage in Coligny Plaza, on the boardwalk at Shelter Cove, or under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, it's always for the whole family, and it's always free!
