Coastal Discovery Museum
The Coastal Discovery Museum offers year round, hands-on activities and programs to teach about Hilton Head and its surrounding Islands. The Museum hosts year-round indoor and outdoor exhibitions on tours and cruises, five days a week. Participants are presented with the ecology and history of the region in order to illustrate the necessity of preserving the natural, cultural, and historical features of the area.
Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn consists of 68 acres at the intersections of Island Parkway and Highway 278. The land of the Honey Ham Farm was used for cash crops before the Civil War. The Main house on the property was built in 1859 and additions have been built on, and other small buildings have also been added to the property. After the Civil War, the land was purchased by northern businessmen for the purpose of hunting and fishing activities. The farm was purchased again, in the 1950's, by the Hack family and it was used once again as a residence.
Hilton Head acquired the land in the late 1990's as a part of an acquisition program to ensure that it would not be further developed. The museum's main function on the historical property is to educate visitors about the rich natural environment, culture, and history of the lowcountry and Hilton Head Island. The Coastal Discover Museum also features nature tours, history tours, guided walks, kayak trips, dolphin cruises, summer walks, and a Nature Discovery Camp.
