Plantations

Hilton Head Island consists mainly of planned communities know as plantations. The larger plantations allow access to their dining, shopping, and golf areas. These areas were developed in very eco-friendly ways, with little disruption to the land and water. If the beaches included in the grounds of the plantation are private, access from a public adjoining beach is permitted.

Sea Pines Plantation

Sea Pines Plantation is both the first and the largest planned community of Hilton Head Island. Over 5,000 acres are included in the plantation, offering a number of uncrowded beaches, golf courses, shops, and restaurants. Harbour Town is built around a marina and offers the area’s most popular collection of dining and shopping options.

Forrest Beach Plantation

Forrest Beach abuts Sea Pines Plantation to the north. Several affordable lodging selections are available here and there are many beachfront options. The ever-popular tourist destination, Coligny Plaza, is also located here. Over 60 shops and restaurants along with a movie theatre make it a great place for entertainment.

Palmetto Dunes Plantation

Palmetto Dunes Plantations is less than half the size of Sea Pines Plantation, but is still Hilton Head Island’s second largest planned community. Here you will find several golf courses and a racquet club. The numerous lagoons also make this a popular spot for kayaking. Shelter Cove Harbour is located within the Palmetto Dunes Plantation and is filled with restaurants and shops.
