Hilton Head Golf Courses
Hilton Head Island, SC is a golfer's paradise, boasting several courses recognized in both America's and The World's Top 100 Courses. The picturesque landscapes, year round good weather, and renowned courses designed by some of the best in the game, combine to make playing golf in Hilton Head an unforgettable vacation experience. The Island ranked in the top ten of Golf Digest's top golf resorts, and continues to strive to offer golfers one of the finest golf destinations on the east coast.
Hilton Head and its surrounding areas are home to more than thirty Championship golf courses, many of which are recognized by top PGA players as well as course designers to be the best courses to play in the area. The coast of South Carolina is an ideal place to build golf courses, gently integrating them with the natural surrounding beauty of the sandy beaches, moss-draped oaks, and towering pine trees. The Island proudly hosts both the PGA's MCI Heritage Tour as well as the Verizon Heritage PGA tournament annually.
Visiting golfers will find that many of the area's golf courses are public, and those on the plantations are often open to visitors who purchase a day pass. Most of the local courses offer food and refreshment, a pro-shop, and a driving range. Green fees vary greatly by season and location, but golfers will generally find that the prestige and elegance of the Hilton Head golf community can sometimes lead to higher prices. If this is your first time golfing in Hilton Head, consider doing a little research before you select the courses you wish to play, and remember that some Hilton Head golf courses offer substantial discounts late in the day. With so many courses to choose from, it won't be hard to find something that is agreeable with your skill level as well as with your budget.
"The World's Biggest Water Hazard"
Imagine a water hazard so large that you need a ferry boat to get to the green! Well, that's not exactly true, but if you wanted to embellish (as some golfers and fishermen do) you could certainly say Calibogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, were the biggest water hazards you had ever encounter; that is of course assuming you were playing a course on Daufuskie Island. What a great way to spend a day on the course; a ferry ride to the island, then perhaps play the front nine before retiring to the clubhouse for libations, and returning to play the back nine before the ferry departs for the return trip to Hilton Head!
The "Daufuskie Island Resort and Breathe Spa" has been recognized by "Golf Digest" magazine as one of the top seventy five golf resorts in the entire world! Open to everyone, the two courses at the "Breathe Spa" consist of thirty six of the most beautiful holes imaginable. Tom Weiskoph and Jay Morrrish designed the par 72, 6,900 yard "Bloody Point" course. The Melrose is a Jack Nicklaus signature course, a little longer at 7,081 yards, is also par 72. Combined the two course offer play over literally every type of Lowcountry terrain; presenting scenery as beautiful as the holes are challenging.
The Melrose course winds through the woods of Daufuskie until the last three holes; which skirt the Atlantic shoreline. The eighteenth hole of this course actually has the beach in play and the green almost appears to dip into the ocean (please refer to the title of this article). The Mungen River is the border of the Bloody Point course, which is known for its playability and open layout; making it an excellent course for duffers of all skill levels. As the course meanders through and around the islands, moss draped forest, and salt marshes, and skirts the intercoastal waterway, players encounter challenging bunkers and elevated greens. On the sixth hole players may also encounter the courses resident Bald Eagle!
Haig Point, a beautiful Daufuskie Island residential community, is also home to one of the areas most outstanding and challenging courses; however, play at Haig point is restricted to residents and guest only.
There are several different ferry services and private charters which offer passage to Daufuskie Island, including; Calibogue Cruises, the Palmetto Ferry Company, Vagabond Cruises and the Breathe Spas own ferry, which departs from their embarkation center on Squire Pope Road.
